Town Hall project to give £3M boost to local economy

Kidderminster Town Council is delighted to hear that the Town Hall Transformation project is delivering more than twice the agreed social value for the project.

‘Social value’ in construction refers to the potential benefits a project can offer both the local and wider community.

The contractors on the site, Speller Metcalfe Ltd., have achieved this by giving direct employment to 8 local employees, by engaging 17 local subcontractors full time for the duration of the project and by sourcing local suppliers for employees and subcontractors. They have also worked to provide local skills and support though employment fairs, local schools and colleges visits and apprenticeships on the contract.

Councillor John Beckingham, Chairman of the Council’s Town Hall Committee said that the Town Hall project could deliver a boost of almost 3 million pounds to the local economy.

“It’s great news to hear that the contractors on the project are achieving such high levels of social value through using local employment and using local suppliers. This is a really valuable boost to our local economy and another benefit to the community resulting from this exciting project. I would like to thank the contractors for making this happen and also all involved with the Levelling Up Fund and the local regeneration team, as well as our own Town Council staff.

We are all looking forward to the completion of the project, when the Town Hall will become a treasured asset for all the community, providing great civic, cultural, educational, leisure and entertainment opportunities for the people of Kidderminster.”

Matt Smith, Town Hall Manager, said:

“We are thrilled to announce the upcoming public opening of the newly transformed Kidderminster Town Hall in September 2025. This ambitious project, delivered by Speller Metcalfe, has successfully preserved our historic building while introducing significant enhancements, including a modern café, an upgraded music hall, and improved accessibility.

We are particularly proud to have exceeded our social value targets. Our efforts have created £821k in job opportunities and employability benefits, alongside £2.13 million in support for local businesses.

This project highlights our steadfast commitment to community collaboration and environmental sustainability, including substantial contributions to local initiatives and our pledge to achieve net zero carbon by 2050. We look forward to the positive and lasting impact this revitalized space will have on our community.”
