Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Kidderminster–Husum Twinning Charter
Kidderminster Town Council and the Kidderminster–Husum Twinning Association were delighted to welcome a delegation from Kidderminster’s twin town of Husum, Germany, for a special weekend of celebrations marking 50 years since the signing of the official Twinning Charter between the two towns.
The celebrations, held from Friday 23rd to Sunday 25th October 2026, brought together friends, visitors, dignitaries and members of the local community to celebrate five decades of friendship, cultural exchange and lasting connections between Kidderminster and Husum.
The weekend began on Friday evening with a welcome reception in the King Charles Room at Kidderminster Town Hall. Guests also enjoyed a guided tour of the Town Hall, kindly led by our volunteers, showcasing its recent transformation whilst highlighting the building’s rich history and character.
On Saturday evening, a special anniversary concert took place at the Town Hall, featuring a wonderful variety of musical performances from Farefeld, Jasmine and Zachary from Wyre Forest Young Voices, The Shanty Crew, KODYS (Kidderminster Operatic and Dramatic Youth Section), Kidderminster Valentines and Steve Worley of Beatlesque. The concert was a fantastic celebration of music, friendship and community spirit, with performers and audience members coming together to mark this important milestone.
The celebrations continued on Sunday with a special anniversary lunch at Kidderminster Golf Club. The lunch included an exchange of commemorative plaques between Kidderminster and Husum, marking the 50th anniversary of the Twinning Charter and recognising the longstanding friendship between the two towns.
Throughout the weekend, visitors also took part in activities organised by the Twinning Association, including crocus planting, a church service and a traditional skittles evening. These activities formed an enjoyable part of the weekend’s programme, continuing the tradition of shared activities and experiences that has been an important part of the twinning relationship over the years.
The Mayor of Kidderminster, Councillor Shazu Miah, was delighted to welcome the delegation from Husum and join in the celebrations.
Reflecting on the anniversary, the Mayor said:
“Whilst we are marking 50 years since the official signing of the Twinning Charter, the friendship between Kidderminster and Husum stretches back much further. It is a relationship that has been nurtured through decades of visits, exchanges and shared experiences.
I think that is what makes occasions like this so special. They remind us that twinning is not simply an agreement between two towns, but a friendship between people.
“I would like to express my sincere thanks to the Kidderminster–Husum Twinning Association, the Twinning Celebration Working Group, the Town Council, volunteers, KDYT, concert organisers and performers, and everyone who contributed to making this special weekend such a success.
To our friends from Husum, thank you once again for travelling to Kidderminster and joining us to celebrate this important milestone. Here’s to many more years of friendship between our two towns!”
